Rev. Melvin Edward "M.E." Rushing, Sr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 07, 2021 at his residence in Hammond, Louisiana surrounded by his loving family at the age of 80. He was born on Friday, October 25, 1940 in Meridian, Mississippi. Rev. M.E. pastored Savannah Branch Church of God in Folsom, LA, Hammond Church of God, Hammond, LA, and Mandeville Church of God, Mandeville, LA. He was Interim Pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Osyka, MS, Silver Springs Baptist Church, MS, and 12 years evangelizing nationwide. Rev Rushing also formed a gospel group called the Rush Me’s and sang in All-Denominational Churches for many years. He wrote two books, “Where Are The Nine?” and “Hand Over Handicap”. He recorded “Just A Closer Walk With Thee” and wrote and recorded “Let Me See Me”, “He Came A Long Way From Heaven”, and “God’s Going To Make A Way”, and preached the Gospel for more than 62 years. He preached, sang, and played piano for many churches. Rev. M.E. was a Deputy Marshal commissioned by the 7 th Ward for over 50 years and was a former police officer with the Hammond Police Department. He also was a piano technician and owned and operated Rushing Piano & Organ Service.
Rev. M.E. was married for 61 years and is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Louise Dixon Rushing; children, Rev. Melvin E. Rushing, Jr. and his wife, Priscilla, James M. “Mike” Rushing, and Mundy D. Rushing; siblings, Helen Jones, Bud Rushing, and Sam Rushing; also survived by 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his son, Mark A. Rushing; parents, Suzie and Drew Rushing; siblings, Evelyn Bridges, Dave Rushing, James Rushing, and Hershel Rushing; and great granddaughter, Madison Jordan.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at My Father’s House Church, 18431 Highway 1057, Kentwood, Louisiana 70444 on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 1:00 pm. Rev. Frank Tremie presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 am until service time. Interment will be held at New Haven Baptist Church at a later date.
