Sgt. Marty A. Melerine Sr., 85, of Poydras, passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at his home at 6:05 am surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Thursday, February 9, 1939, a lifelong resident of St. Bernard Parish, a member of the Plumbers Union Local 60, and former co-owner of their family-owned business - Melerine’s Seafood on David Drive in Metairie.
Sgt. Melerine was a 35-year veteran deputy of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office. He began his career in law enforcement in the late 1980s as a member of the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office Marine Division. Over the years he also worked in crime prevention and as a member of the Field Operations Bureau Patrol Division. In 2008, Sgt. Melerine became a member of the Traffic Division where he was still working part-time serving his beloved community by handling vehicle lockouts and responding to traffic accidents.
Official release by the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office: “The passing of Sgt. Melerine brings me great sadness. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed” Sheriff Pohlmann said. “If you have ever locked your keys in your car and called the Sheriff’s Office for help, there’s a good chance Sgt. Melerine was the one who came to your rescue,” the Sheriff said. “His dedication to serving our community touched countless lives in ways we often take for granted.”
Sgt. Melerine is survived by his daughter, Jill A. Melerine, two sons, Marty A. Melerine, Jr. (Rosa), and Dean J. Melerine (Michelle); and two sisters, Brenda Melerine Serpas (the late Lionel) and June Melerine Tujaque (Fredrick). Also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Preceded in death by the love of his life, his beloved wife of 63 years, Vivian Gonzales Melerine in June; parents, Annie Rodriguez and Mack Melerine; brothers, Max “Taco” Melerine (the late Jane) and Rudy Melerine (the late Claudia).
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Mass at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 2805 Bayou Road, St. Bernard, Louisiana 70085 on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 12:00 pm. Visitation will be held at church from 9:30 am until service time. A reception will be held at The Isleños Center following the Mass.
