Maria Nela Caballero

May 8, 1979 — Jul 11, 2026

Hammond, Louisiana

Maria Nela Caballero, born on Tuesday, May 8, 1979 in Tegucigalpa, Francisco Morazán, Honduras, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 11, 2026, in Covington, Louisiana. Maria’s life was a testament to purpose, strength, and unwavering faith—a legacy deeply cherished by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Maria grew up in Laplace, Louisiana, later making Hammond her home. Her educational journey was marked by determination and a love for learning. She graduated from John Curtis Christian High School before pursuing higher education at Tarrant County College in Dallas, Texas, where she received associates degrees in both science and arts. Driven by a profound interest in the natural world, Maria continued her studies at the University of New Orleans, earning a bachelor’s degree in Geology.

Her professional aspirations led her to her dream role as a geologist for the Department of Environmental Quality for the State of Louisiana. Maria approached her career with commitment, contributing her expertise to environmental stewardship and leaving a positive mark on the community she served.

Maria’s proudest accomplishments, however, were rooted in her dedication as a loving wife and mother. She is survived by her beloved wife, Lee Caballero; her children, Addison, Nicholas and Brent; her mother, Maria Nela Pinel Caballero, her father, Julian Caballero, Sr.; her brothers, Jose (Celia) and Julian (Leah); her niece, Gabby; nephew, Julian; and many other nieces and nephews she adored and loved with her whole heart.

Her family and friends remember her as a woman whose kindness, compassion, and gentle spirit touched them deeply. Her love for geology, her unwavering devotion to her family, and her abiding respect for others earned her admiration from all facets of her life.

Above all, Maria’s greatest desire was to be known as someone who loved "my guy" Jesus with all her heart and trusted Him beyond measure. Faith was the foundation of her existence, providing strength through challenges and filling her days with hope. She consistently pointed others toward the love and hope she found in Christ, exemplifying a life lived with intention, generosity, and selfless love.

Maria firmly believed that God calls each person to imprint the world with love, kindness, and faith. Her daily actions reflected this belief, and the legacy she leaves will continue to inspire all privileged to walk a part of life’s journey with her. Though she will be profoundly missed, her example reminds those left behind to live with purpose, to love generously, to trust in God completely, and to strive to leave a mark on the lives of others.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 600 N Oak St, Hammond, LA 70401. Family, friends, and members of the community are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of a life beautifully lived.

Though the ache of her loss will remain deeply felt, Maria’s example compels us to live with intention, to love abundantly, to trust in her guy, Jesus completely, and to leave our own indelible mark on the world. “Please know He is calling you to be a powerful stamp in this world. Leave your mark.” Forever loved. Forever remembered.
