Karen Elizabeth Mazzella Heaps passed away peacefully at her home on June 1, 2026, at the age of 63.

Born on September 29, 1962, Karen spent the last 20 years of her life in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, where she built a life centered around family, friendship and making memories with those she loved. She was known for her fun-loving spirit and enjoyed spending time with family and friends, swimming and singing karaoke. Karen never missed an opportunity to celebrate, and she brought laughter and joy to those around her. Karen was known for her vibrant spirit, love of family, and ability to bring people together and will be remembered for the joy and laughter she shared with those around her.

Karen was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Heaps; her sister, Donna Mazzella Benson; her brother, Larry Joseph Mazzella; and her parents, Thomas Allen Mazzella, Sr. and Mary Alice Davidson Mazzella and many extended family members that she held dearly.

She is survived by her two sons, Sean Stephen Heaps (Stephanie) and Cory James Heaps (Morgan); her sister, Barbara Rose Mazzella Miller (Mark); and many extended family members and friends who will cherish her memory.

In accordance with her wishes, Karen will be cremated and placed alongside her beloved husband. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Down Syndrome Society.
