The roar of engines and the thrill of the tracks reflected Harry’s energetic approach to life.
Harry Edmond Hughes, Sr., known to family and friends as a devoted husband, father, and enthusiast of life’s adventures, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2026, in Ponchatoula, Louisiana. He was born on Sunday, August 29, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana, a city that shaped the foundation of his character and many of his passions.
Harry built an exemplary career as a master mechanic, and his passion for automobiles defined much of his professional journey. He was a retired Nissan Master Mechanic and took great pride in having been the former owner of Hughes Automotive in Chalmette. He built and raced a 1966 Chevelle at Laplace Speedway, and later, a 1984 Cavalier Z-24 at Gulfport Dragway. The roar of engines and the thrill of the tracks reflected Harry’s energetic approach to life. That love for cars was not just a personal hobby, he passed along his deep appreciation to his sons, instilling in them a lifelong bond, a deep appreciation for engines, mechanical know-how, and the thrill of the race.
In their retirement, Harry and his beloved wife, Linda, embraced adventure and together explored the country in their motorhome. These journeys were filled with discovery, laughter, and the quiet contentment of time well spent together, exploring new places and savoring the simple joys that came their way.
