Donald Louie Foster, a man whose life was marked by unwavering dedication to service, craftsmanship, and family, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 1, 2026, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. Born on Wednesday, June 3, 1936, in New Orleans, Donald’s journey was one that touched many lives over the course of his remarkable 89 years.
Donald’s early years reflected a strong commitment to his community and his country. In the late 1950s, he served with the New Orleans Police Department, laying the groundwork for a life of discipline and public service. Following this, he enlisted in the United States Air Force before transferring to the United States Army, where he pursued Flight School. Donald served with distinction as a combat pilot during the Vietnam War, an experience that earned him the Bronze Star Medal and the Aviation Heroism Medal—testaments to his courage, skill, and dedication.
After concluding his military service, Donald continued to soar in his career as a helicopter pilot for Chevron Oil Company, where he worked diligently until his retirement. Throughout his professional life, he demonstrated the same tenacity and hard work that characterized every aspect of his existence.
Beyond his professional achievements, Donald found his true passion in the art of woodworking. Affectionately known throughout his community as “The Door Maker,” he had a unique gift for transforming weathered cypress and reclaimed lumber into exquisite works of craftsmanship. His home was a treasure trove of stories about the wood he cherished—each piece carrying its own history and future purpose. He delighted visitors with tales of where the wood had come from and the projects inspired by it. His woodworking was more than a hobby; it was a legacy, breathing new life into old materials and nurturing community spirit.
Donald’s personal interests were multifaceted and reflective of his vibrant character. While he once made a determined effort to learn the guitar, he ultimately found solace in listening to guitar music, country gospel, and classic country tunes. He was also a devoted restorer of vintage pickup trucks and automobiles, constantly engaging in remodeling and repair projects that showcased his talent and passion for mechanics.
Those who knew Donald often remarked on his sharp intellect and incredible memory, qualities that earned him immense respect and admiration. Known as one of the hardest-working men in town, he possessed an incredible memory and a sharp mind that often left people saying he was the smartest man they ever met. Above all, Donald was a storyteller and a family man, proud of the heritage he nurtured and the generations that followed in his footsteps.
Donald leaves behind a remarkable five-generation legacy, a testament to his lifetime of love and devotion.
