Barbara Lumsden Albury

June 2, 1932 — October 14, 2021

Covington

Barbara Lumsden Albury of Covington, LA, left this Earth peacefully on October 14, 2021, having lived 89 very full years. Barbara was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and will be missed dearly.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Herbert Stansfield Lumsden and Alice Penelope Fleming.

She is survived by her husband, George Harold Albury, her sister, Mary Lumsden Duckett, her children, Leslie Albury Power and Allison Albury Becnel, their spouses, Michael Power and Carl Becnel, her grandchildren, Matthew Power, Samantha Power, and Sean Power, and Matthew’s spouse, Elizabeth Power; and Barbara’s great-grandchildren Ashlyn, Ashton, and Abigail Power. Barbara is also survived by Allison’s step children, Trey Becnel, Christina Becnel Rando and her husband, Nick Rando, and their two children, Brianna and Max Rando.

Barbara was born on June 2, 1932, in Champagne, IL. She was a graduate of Biloxi High School in Mississippi, where she was valedictorian, and graduated magna cum laude from St. Louis University in Missouri. Barbara loved adventure and decided to move to New Orleans to accept a position with Catholic Charities as an adoptive placement social worker. There, she fell in love with Louisiana and also Harold, whom she married on June 1, 1958. They welcomed their first child in November 1959 and their second child in September 1964. Barbara raised her kids, often while working or studying. She completed a master’s degree in social work at Louisiana State University and then worked for Children’s Hospital and DePaul Hospital.

Barbara had a gift for the creative and an entrepreneurial nature, especially related to interior design. She was often working on projects and made one of them into a business, “The Golden Touch”, which made gold leafing kits. It was eventually a victim of its own success, as she could not keep up with demand.

Barbara then moved on to her next endeavor. Her longest and most fulfilling work outside of her home was as the CEO of Classic Style Homes, Inc., which was a residential construction firm. There, she served as owner and contractor, with her husband Harold’s assistance, for twenty-four years. She built over 60 beautiful homes for families in Metairie and Kenner, and then built on the Northshore, as well.

Barbara was a smart and independent woman who taught her daughters the value of education and the importance of having work they cared about. She would often give her daughters insights into people’s behavior, encouraging them to see others with kindness and understanding. She was a wise woman who often provided insight and words of wisdom to guide her daughters.

Barbara was a nurturing grandmother to her three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and had a special relationship with each of them. Barbara’s legacy is the family she created, cared for, and taught over the years. We will do our best to live out the values she demonstrated and to care for each other as she would have, if she were still with us. We are incredibly grateful for her 89 beautiful years on Earth.
