Alvin Junior Kirby passed away peacefully at his home in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, on Monday, June 29, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on Tuesday, October 11, 1955, in Independence, Louisiana, Alvin embodied the quiet grace and steadfast dedication of a life well lived.
Alvin spent his entire career serving his community, retiring after 37 years of faithful work with the City of Ponchatoula Water & Sewerage Department. His long tenure speaks not only to his reliability and professionalism but also to the deep-seated commitment he held for his neighbors and friends. Alvin approached his work with the same humility and diligence that characterized every aspect of his life.
Outside of work, Alvin found great joy in the simple pleasures. He loved to go hunting and fishing, especially on his days off and during vacations. These moments outdoors were not just hobbies, but a way for Alvin to connect with nature and share special times with family and friends. They revealed the contentment he found in a life that valued experiences over accolades, and relationships over possessions.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Connie Sue Effler Kirby, with whom he shared 45 treasured years.
Alvin's rich family life was a source of immense pride and fulfillment for him. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Connie Sue Effler Kirby, with whom he shared 45 treasured years. He is survived by his daughter, Pam Kirby McSpadden, and his son, Brent Alvin Kirby. Father-in-law of Jack McSpadden. Alvin was a devoted grandfather to Brandon Price, Shawn McSpadden, and Austin McSpadden, and his loving presence will be deeply missed in their lives.
His sisters, Mary Kirby Bowman and Shirley Kirby Effler (Richie), survive him, as do his nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and many dear friends who will always remember his warmth and good humor.
Preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Margaret Ellenberger Kirby, and his father, Alvin Finley Kirby. He is also reunited with his sister, Ruth Ann Kirby; brother-in-law, Bruce Bowman, Sr.; sister-in-law, Paula Effler; nephew, Ronnie Bruce McCahill; and nieces Nicole Pinion, Jamie McSpadden, and Holly Pinion.
The visitation will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in the chapel of LN Hughes Funeral Services, 21400 South I-12 Service Rd, Ponchatoula, LA. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. The graveside service will be at Sandhill Cemetery, Ponchatoula, LA.
